Diagnostic Evaluation
Dr. Podell is skilled in the diagnostic assessment of anxiety and mood disorders in children, adolescents, and young adults. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a structured, goal oriented, short-term treatment that focuses on the connection between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. In CBT, youth learn how to identify anxious feelings and emotions, use relaxation techniques, challenge anxious and depressive cognitions, and utilize problem solving skills. Throughout treatment, youth gain a variety of coping skills and opportunities to practice using these skills. CBT utilizes between-session assignments to help youth apply new skills and techniques learned in treatment.
Dr. Podell provides individual and family cognitive-behavioral therapy for youth and young adults with anxiety and mood disorders including Social Phobia, Separation Anxiety, Generalized Anxiety, OCD, Panic Disorder, Specific Phobias, Selective Mutism, School Refusal, Trichotillomania, Tic Disorders, and Depression.
Therapy sessions are scheduled for 45 minutes and are typically conducted on a weekly basis. Treatment is designed to be short term and ranges anywhere from 10-32 sessions depending on the individual and family’s needs.
At times individuals may need medication in addition to CBT to deal with more severe problems or help use CBT more effectively. Dr. Podell collaborates with psychiatrists who have expertise in the pharmacological management of anxiety and depression. Treatment also often involves consultation and collaboration with school personnel. Dr. Podell will work with you and your family to design a comprehensive treatment plan.
